New Mexico health officials have confirmed three cases of cyclosporiasis this year, a parasitic illness linked to contaminated fresh fruits and vegetables.
Cyclospora Parasite Cases Rise
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported more than 140 cases of the illness in 17 other states since May, with at least 20 people hospitalized. Health experts say the cyclospora parasite has been associated with contaminated produce, including leafy greens, berries, and herbs.
While the risk cannot be completely eliminated, they recommend taking precautions. “The best thing you can do is be judicious about where you’re getting your produce from, washing it as best you can, and then being on the alert for any symptoms that occur,” a health expert said. Doctors advise seeing a healthcare provider if symptoms last more than a few days or if dehydration occurs.
