Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux has outlined his long-term goal to make the Dallas Police Department the most proactive police department in the country. In a recent interview, Comeaux discussed his vision for the department, including recruiting gains, downtown safety, and the leadership culture that is driving crime down.
Proactive Policing
According to Comeaux, the department is not just waiting for emergency calls, but is instead going out to look for serious offenders, particularly those with felony warrants. The department also works with federal partners daily to target these individuals.
Comeaux credited the department’s progress to rebranding and building a culture that officers want to join and remain a part of. The department recently held a recruiting event that drew 337 applicants, a significant increase from previous events.
Leadership and Staffing
Comeaux also discussed changes to the department’s leadership and staffing structure. The department has brought in experienced civilian professionals to fill key roles, such as communications and human resources, allowing officers to focus on policing.
The department continues to see crime reductions, but Comeaux emphasized that there is still work to be done. He compared his role to that of a general manager building a winning sports team, saying that he gets to put the right players in the right positions to succeed.
