A popular mobile game, ‘June’s Journey’, is collaborating with historians and museums to help recover lost Revolutionary War treasures. The game has been downloaded over 50 million times and has a mostly female following in the US.
Lost Artifacts
Among the lost artifacts are an 18th century Battle of Cowpens medal, a coat of arms, a cannon, and a military cap with three ostrich feathers. These items will be integrated into the game for a limited period, and players will be challenged to find them.
The idea for the collaboration came from the 1999 children’s movie ‘Stuart Little’, where a missing painting was discovered in the background of a scene. The game’s director, Ben O’Donnell, hopes that by embedding missing artifacts in the game, they can be recovered in the real world.
Historical Significance
The lost artifacts have significant historical value, and the game’s creators hope that by educating players about them, they can trigger someone’s memory and lead to their recovery. The game will feature a dedicated page with information about the missing items, and players who think they have found something will be directed to a submissions channel.
Don Hagist, a historian and managing editor of the ‘Journal of the American Revolution’, is working with the game’s creators to choose which artifacts to include. He believes that incorporating these items into a medium that millions of people will see is ‘brilliant’ and could lead to their recovery.
