Chery Auto has officially inaugurated its Rosslyn Plant in South Africa, with high-level officials from China and South Africa in attendance. The plant, which was originally built in 1963, has been revitalized under Chery Auto’s stewardship and will serve as a comprehensive automotive hub integrating R&D, manufacturing, supply chain, skills training, and global radiation.
Investment and Job Creation
The opening of the Rosslyn Plant marks a significant investment by Chery Auto in South Africa, with the company committing to retain all 692 employees in the factory and drive nearly 3,000 jobs upstream and downstream of the industrial chain. The factory will be fully upgraded and renovated, with an annual production capacity of 50,000 vehicles per shift.
Chery Auto has also launched an extensive localization plan, aiming to achieve a 40% localization rate by 2028. The company has established a complete brand matrix in South Africa, including CHERY, OMODA & JAECOO, JETOUR, iCAUR, and LEPAS, offering multi-powertrain products, including ICE, hybrid, and battery electric.
Global Expansion and Social Responsibility
Chery Auto’s expansion into South Africa is part of its broader globalization strategy, with the company aiming to deepen its footprint in the region through local manufacturing, local R&D, and localized services. The company has also announced plans to launch a cooperation project in key nature reserves in South Africa to promote biodiversity protection, ecosystem restoration, and community livelihood improvement.
Additionally, Chery Auto has pledged to donate $12 million to support global education projects, particularly in South Africa, and has launched programming and robotics courses to help prepare South African students for future careers.
