Taiwan’s mangrove land crab population is experiencing a resurgence due to the implementation of road closures and bamboo bridges during breeding season.
Conservation Efforts Pay Off
The Taijiang National Park in southern Taiwan has seen a significant increase in observed crab numbers, from over 5,000 annually to more than 10,000 last year, according to park director Chen Jun-shan.
The road closures and bamboo bridges have helped reduce roadkill and allowed the crabs to safely migrate to the sea to lay eggs.
The conservation efforts are part of a larger initiative to protect Taiwan’s environment, which has become a priority for the government after years of rapid industrialization.
