Windsor Locks voters will head to the polls on July 14 for a fourth referendum on the town budget. The latest proposed budget cuts have raised concerns about the future of library services and parks and recreation programs.
Library Funding at Risk
The Windsor Locks Public Library faces significant reductions, with its annual operating budget potentially being cut from $450,000 to $235,000. This would be the lowest level of funding since 1992, and could result in reduced hours, staff layoffs, and the elimination of programs.
Library Director Lois Crozier said the impact would be significant, with no new books, programs, or resources for the town. Demand for library services has grown, especially with the current economic situation, as people rely on the library for movies, books, and other resources.
Summer Camp Programs Also at Risk
A $100,000 cut to the Parks and Recreation Department could threaten summer camp programs. First Selectman Jonathan Savino is encouraging residents to participate in the upcoming vote, regardless of how they vote.
Savino said voter turnout has declined with each referendum, and he hopes residents will come out to vote. The repeated budget rejections have required additional cuts, and Savino does not want to see library services and summer camp programs reduced.
