The Jefferson County Commission is set to continue its support for the Birmingham Gateway Project, which was launched in 2022 to improve the appearance of gateways into the county. Commissioner Joe Knight noted that the project has been successful and the commission is considering allotting more than $1.3 million to extend the agreement for landscaping maintenance, mowing, pruning, and trash pick-up in various Alabama Department of Transportation rights-of-way.
City Walk Funding
The commission also discussed funding for City Walk, a recreational space created with the reconstruction of the Interstates 20/59 bridge through downtown Birmingham. The space, which includes a skate park, is managed and operated by the BJCC, but faces funding challenges to maintain it. The commission is working with ALDOT to find a sustainable funding model, with the goal of all parties contributing to the maintenance costs.
