The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has purchased two migrant detention centers in California for $1.5 billion. The facilities, California City Detention Facility and Otay Mesa Detention Center, will be used to carry out the Trump administration’s mass deportation agenda.
Expansion of Deportation Capacity
The purchase was made possible by President Trump’s spending bill, which allowed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to expand detention space. The facilities will provide ICE with more resources to detain and remove illegal immigrants living in the country.
The California City Detention Facility has a capacity of 2,560 beds, while the Otay Mesa Detention Center has a capacity of 1,994 beds. The facilities will be managed by CoreCivic, a private prison company, under existing management contracts with ICE.
The purchase of these facilities is seen as a move to increase the federal government’s ability to enforce immigration laws in California, which has been a sanctuary state for illegal immigrants. The state’s sanctuary policies have limited the ability of ICE to use private prisons to hold migrants.
