Louisville’s Metro Safe has launched a new text-to-911 service, giving people in Louisville an alternative way to contact emergency services when calling is not possible. Mayor Craig Greenberg demonstrated the new software, advising individuals to call if they can, but now they have the option to text if they can’t call.
How it Works
When using the service, individuals are advised to begin their first message with their location and a brief description of the emergency. A call taker will then answer, asking a few follow-up questions. The new software also includes an automatic translation feature, allowing users to text in any language.
According to Devin Lovan, a call taker, the new software is a great tool that allows them to get help started faster. While the text-to-911 service is now active, officials continue to urge individuals to call 911 in emergencies whenever possible.
