Oviedo Mall is moving forward with plans to build two new apartment complexes, which will bring approximately 700 units to the city. The development director, Kevin Hipes, announced that an agreement has been reached with property owners to begin construction on the mall property.
Development Plans
The first phase of development will include about 400 units on 15 acres, including the area where the Macy’s building currently stands. The Macy’s building will be demolished to make way for the apartments, and a new public entrance to the mall will be built. A second phase will add another 300 units on the west side of the mall.
According to Hipes, the development is entirely funded by private investment, with a development group spending an estimated $100 million to build the apartments. Hipes believes that the development will benefit the mall and the local community, saying it will ‘kill two birds with one stone’ by bringing the mall back to life and reducing traffic in local neighborhoods.
The developers will now work on construction plans to present to the city in order to obtain the necessary permits. Hipes estimates that construction could begin towards the start of 2027.
