The Texarkana, Arkansas, Board of Directors has cleared the way for a new convenience store in the College Hill neighborhood. During a regular meeting, the board voted unanimously to rezone land on Dudley Street to allow a convenience store there.
Details of the Plan
The plan comes as residents, along with City Hall officials and other stakeholders such as the Texarkana USA Chamber of Commerce, explore options for bringing a grocery store to College Hill. The city Planning and Zoning Commission had unanimously recommended approval of the rezoning.
The store, called U.S.’s Get It and Go, will be a small neighborhood retailer focused on everyday necessities, including snacks, beverages, household goods, tobacco products, and convenience items. It will not provide ATM services or sell beer, wine, liquor, lottery tickets, or hot food.
Expected benefits of the plan include improving access to everyday necessities for nearby residents, putting an underutilized property into productive commercial use, creating local jobs, increasing local tax revenue, encouraging additional neighborhood investment, and improving the property’s appearance and neighborhood security through lighting and surveillance cameras.
