Over the Independence Day weekend, federal immigration authorities arrested hundreds of illegal immigrants across the country, including some with convictions for murder, burglary, and child sex crimes.
Nationwide Sweep
The arrests were made as part of a holiday sweep by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the arrests included Radimir Thompson-Nagle, a Panamanian citizen with criminal convictions for murder and assault in Brooklyn, New York.
Other notable arrests included Marcos Rubio-Hernandez, a Mexican citizen previously convicted of second-degree murder and kidnapping in North Carolina, and Roberto Gutierrez-Diaz, also from Mexico, who has convictions for sodomy and sexual abuse of a child under 12 years old in Kentucky.
DHS Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis praised the work of ICE officers, saying they work around the clock to make communities safer. The Trump administration has hired 12,000 new ICE officers in less than a year, more than doubling the agency’s workforce.
The arrests came as the Trump administration continues its deportation campaign targeting criminal illegal immigrants and pushing back on sanctuary jurisdictions. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin criticized sanctuary city politicians, saying they put illegal alien criminals over their own citizens and pose a national security threat.
