Dear Ms. Stevi, a poet from Columbus, has been writing as a way to process her environment and how she fits within it since she was a child. She began keeping a diary under lock and key and later filled notebook after notebook with her thoughts and feelings.
Early Influences
Stevi’s writing was influenced by her experiences as a Black woman in America, including her time at Fisk University in Nashville, where she began to explore themes of racial inequity, class divide, and police brutality.
Her mother, a former police officer, had a significant impact on Stevi’s perspective on these issues. Stevi noted that her mother’s desire to help and uplift people was evident, but she also witnessed police harassment and overreach firsthand.
Growth and Development
As Stevi grew older, her writing evolved to reflect her changing perspectives and experiences. She began to explore themes of love, relationships, and motherhood, and her writing became more nuanced and introspective.
Stevi will be performing at the Streetlight Guild on July 9 as part of the ‘All the Words’ poetry open mic miniseries. Her performance will showcase her growth and development as a poet and her ability to connect with others through her words.
