A UN human rights body has called for the release of a Gazan doctor, citing arbitrary detention. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention said that Israel’s actions contravened multiple articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
Detention Details
The doctor, Hussam Abu Safiya, has been detained by Israel, with his lawyer alleging that his health is in grave danger and that he has been subjected to brutal abuse on a daily basis. The Israel Prison Service has not responded to requests for comment, having previously rejected allegations that Abu Safiya and other doctors have been mistreated in prison.
The Israeli Supreme Court has declined to comment on appeals for his release. The UN body’s finding voiced broader concerns that the case may indicate a widespread or systematic practice of arbitrary detention in the country.
