An Indigenous market in northwest Albuquerque has closed after operating for a few weekends due to a lack of vendors. The New Mexico Indian Market was held at a lot near 98th Street and Central Avenue and was started in May by Kevin Wilson, owner of Native Boba Tea.
Wilson aimed to bring markets typically found on reservations into the city. The lot was large enough to accommodate up to 60 vendors, but only about 30 participated. Wilson said several factors contributed to the low turnout, including weather, the location, and competition from other markets happening at the same time.
Wilson plans to focus on his boba tea business in Old Town and may consider hosting a monthly market in the future. He also mentioned the possibility of looking for another space that could better accommodate the market.
