A vehicle crashed into an apartment building in North Windham, Maine, early on the Fourth of July, leaving the driver dead and triggering a significant gas leak that forced evacuations and power disruption in town.
Incident Details
Windham police say first responders were called to the serious crash on Route 115 (Tandberg Trail) around 7:41 a.m. Saturday. A preliminary investigation shows the vehicle crossed the center line, left the roadway, and struck the apartments, impacting the building’s natural gas meter.
The affected building and several nearby residences were evacuated while emergency personnel worked to secure the scene and mitigate the hazard, police said. Route 115 was temporarily closed to traffic, and an emergency power disconnection was conducted in portions of North Windham to ensure the safety of residents, first responders, and utility crews.
The driver died at the scene, according to police, who said their identity and vehicle information are being withheld pending notification of family. It’s unclear what led to the deadly crash, which remains under investigation.
