New Hampshire Governor Kelly Ayotte is highlighting the state’s role in the American Revolution, particularly the Pine Tree Riots, which may have inspired the Boston Tea Party. The riots were in opposition to a British policy preventing colonists from cutting down White pine trees larger than 12 inches in diameter.
New Hampshire’s Contribution to the Revolution
Ayotte explained that the Pine Tree Riots demonstrated that colonists could defy British policies. New Hampshire was also the ninth state to ratify the Constitution and the first state to draft its own Constitution.
The state is showcasing its history at the Great American State Fair on the National Mall in Washington D.C. The exhibition includes a video featuring prominent figures reading from the Declaration of Independence.
Cities and towns in New Hampshire are celebrating the Fourth of July with parades, fairs, and fireworks. Ayotte will be marching in four Independence Day parades on July 3 and 4.
