Insurgents attacked multiple towns in northern and central Mali, according to residents who reported hearing gunfire and explosions. A Tuareg-led insurgent group, the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), claimed responsibility for the attack on the town of Anefis in the northeastern Kidal region.
Recent Attacks
The assault is the latest threat to the military-led government in Mali, where rebels staged high-profile attacks in April, hitting the airport in the capital Bamako, killing the defense minister, and seizing a string of army bases in the north.
A government spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the recent attacks. The FLA and the regional al Qaeda affiliate seized control of Kidal town in the April attacks.
