The Missouri River Is Calling: Why a Morning at Freedom Park Will Change How You See Omaha

There is a moment, somewhere between stepping onto the deck of a decommissioned U.S. Navy minesweeper and watching a barge drift lazily down the Missouri River, when Omaha stops feeling like a Midwestern city and starts feeling like something much larger. That moment happens at Freedom Park, and once you experience it, you will find yourself telling everyone you know to make the trip.

Tucked along the eastern edge of the city in the historic North Downtown neighborhood, Freedom Park sits right on the riverfront at 2497 Freedom Park Road. It is the kind of place that sneaks up on you. You drive past the tree line, pull into the gravel lot, and suddenly there it is — the USS Hazard, a fully intact World War II-era minesweeper, moored at the bank of the Missouri as casually as a rowboat. The ship is the real centerpiece here, and it earned every bit of that distinction. The Hazard served in the Pacific Theater, survived the war without ever striking a mine, and is now one of only four minesweepers of its class still in existence anywhere in the world. Stepping aboard feels genuinely electric.

You can walk the full length of the ship, peer into the tight corridors below deck, and stand at the helm looking out over the river the same way a young sailor might have in 1945. The interpretive signage is thorough without being overwhelming, giving you enough historical context to feel the weight of what you are standing on without turning the visit into a homework assignment. Kids absolutely love it, but so do adults traveling without children — this is not a dumbed-down experience.

Beyond the Hazard, the park includes a retired Navy submarine, the USS Marlin, partially submerged and viewable from the bank, along with a Korean War-era aircraft and a handful of other military exhibits spread across well-kept open grounds. The walking paths along the riverfront are peaceful and offer some of the best unobstructed views of the Missouri you will find anywhere in the metro area. Bring a coffee, find a bench, and just watch the river move. On a clear morning, with the light coming in low over the Iowa bluffs across the water, it is quietly stunning.

Admission is affordable, parking is free, and the park is open seasonally from late spring through early fall. Go on a weekday morning if you can — the crowds are thin and the experience feels almost private. Pack a light jacket if you plan to tour the ship, as the lower decks stay cool even in summer.

Freedom Park does not have a gift shop or a restaurant attached. It does not need one. What it has is authenticity — a genuine piece of American military and river history sitting right on the banks of one of the country’s great waterways, in a city that does not always get credit for how much it has to offer. Come find out for yourself.
