A new portrait exhibit in Minneapolis, titled ‘Threads of Us,’ features 20 individuals from various cultural backgrounds, including Hmong, Thai, Indian, African, Pakistani, and Indigenous communities. The exhibit, created by architect and photographer Patricia Mutebi, aims to showcase how immigrants in Minnesota maintain their cultural heritage.
Preserving Cultural Identity
Mutebi, who was born in Uganda and moved to Minnesota in 2019, understands the importance of preserving cultural identity. She asked each participant in the exhibit to bring meaningful objects that represent their cultural heritage, such as traditional clothing, family heirlooms, and cultural artifacts.
The exhibit is a celebration of the diversity and resilience of immigrant communities in Minnesota. Mutebi hopes that it will inspire people to think about what it means to them to hold onto their cultural heritage and how they can show up in their new communities as their authentic selves.
Community Events
In addition to the exhibit, Minneapolis will host several community events, including the annual Taste of Minnesota festival, which will feature local musicians, food vendors, and cultural performances. The Dakota will also host a tribute show to the soundtrack of the 1995 film ‘Waiting to Exhale,’ and Utepils Brewing will show World Cup matches on large screens.
