Mayfield’s Fernie Corona has been voted the best Las Cruces-area boys athlete in the 2025-26 season. Corona, a senior who plays both point guard and shooting guard, qualified for the poll by being named the Defensive Player of the Year in the 2025-26 Las Cruces Sun-News Boys Basketball Super Team.
Athletic Achievements
He was a leading player for the Trojans, averaging 15.3 points per game. Corona tallied 61 steals across Mayfield’s 28 games and was named an All-District 3-5A selection. He also averaged 4.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.
Corona scored double-digit points in all but three of his games during the 2025-26 season and shot 45% from the field. He scored a season-high 25 points twice: against Clovis on Dec. 12 and against Organ Mountain on Feb. 3.
