House Democrats have placed investigations into President Donald Trump’s new cryptocurrency ventures and multi-billion-dollar business dealings at the top of their legislative agenda should they retake the majority in the upcoming election.
Investigations and Subpoenas
Representative Robert Garcia (D-CA) confirmed the legislative strategy during a recent interview on CNN’s Inside Politics with anchor Kasie Hunt. Garcia stated that a Democratic-led House Oversight Committee would heavily focus on tracking foreign and domestic funds flowing into the Trump family’s financial operations.
The California lawmaker alleged that the lack of disclosure surrounding the digital currency platforms allows unnamed entities to influence the executive branch. Garcia argued that these financial arrangements directly violate the U.S. Constitution’s Emoluments Clause, which prohibits federal officials from accepting gifts or profits from foreign states without congressional approval.
Constitutional Concerns
Garcia noted that the president’s adult children would face congressional subpoenas if they are tied to the financial ventures. The planned investigations would also target the global real estate and investment portfolios of Trump’s family members.
