African Americans have been fighting for centuries to transform America’s promise of liberty into lived reality, including the freedom to wear their natural hair without shame, discrimination, or apology.
The CROWN Act
The Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair (CROWN) Act, created in 2019, made race-based hair discrimination in workplaces, housing, and public or charter schools illegal. However, prejudice remains, with Black women’s hair being perceived as unprofessional and Black women being judged harshly for their appearance.
Pamela Ferrell, owner of Cornrows & Co., encourages all Black people to embrace their hair, in all its textures and styles, as a means of Black liberation and upholding the American dream. Esi Eggleston Bracey, former president of Unilever USA and CEO North America Personal Care, emphasizes the importance of joining the movement to make hair discrimination illegal nationwide through the passage of The CROWN Act.
