As the region experiences extreme heat, the largest power companies are closely monitoring demand. Eversource and National Grid have plans in place to help offset the increasing demand as temperatures go up.
Preparedness Measures
Eversource is running on an enhanced level of preparedness, with the ability to reroute resources to prevent outages. The company’s head of electric operations for Massachusetts, Doug Foley, says his team is closely watching the rising demand.
Additionally, Eversource has a program called ConnectedSolutions, which allows residents and businesses to opt in and help reduce demand when needed. Customers who participate can receive money back for allowing the utility to tweak settings on their thermostats.
National Grid, which serves about 1.4 million customers in the Bay State, is also watching demand and adding extra staffing to deal with potential issues. Both utilities are urging customers to try to cut back on energy usage when possible to help prevent outages.
