Florida drivers are expected to face busy roads and high gas prices over the July 4 weekend. According to AAA, the busiest travel days on Florida roads will begin Thursday and last through the holiday weekend. More than 4 million Floridians are expected to drive over 50 miles to their holiday destinations.

Drivers should be aware that extra state troopers will be patrolling state highways this weekend, focusing on speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving. "Every day, over eight people are killed in crashes on our roadways. Approximately 33 percent of those fatalities are due, in part, to impaired driving," said Sgt. George Edwards with the Florida Highway Patrol.
FHP advises travelers to allow extra time to reach their destinations, slow down, and pay attention to the road. Even though gas prices are dropping, they remain a significant expense for drivers. Across the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast, prices are averaging below $4 per gallon, but they are still about 70 cents higher than last year.
