Step Into the Fox River’s Story at the Aurora Waterfall and Riverfront Trail

There is a spot in Aurora that most people drive right past, never suspecting that tucked along the Fox River, just off Bohn Street on the city’s east side, lies one of the most quietly dramatic little scenes in all of northeastern Illinois. The Aurora Waterfall — formed by the Bohn Street Dam where the river tumbles over a low concrete weir — is the kind of place that makes you stop mid-step, pull out your phone, and immediately text someone: “You have to see this.”

I discovered it on a crisp October morning while following a stretch of the Fox River Trail, the beloved multi-use path that hugs both banks of the river as it winds through Aurora and beyond. The trail is smooth, well-maintained, and accessible to walkers, joggers, and cyclists alike. Within minutes of parking near the Bohn Street access point, I heard the rushing water before I even saw it — that low, constant roar that signals something worth finding. Rounding a bend in the trail, the waterfall came into full view, and I genuinely stood there longer than I intended.

The dam creates a surprisingly wide cascade, maybe forty feet across, with the white water frothing into a churning pool below before the river smooths back out and continues its quiet southward journey. In autumn, the surrounding cottonwoods and river willows frame the whole scene in gold and amber. In spring, the water runs high and forceful, putting on an even more dramatic show. Great blue herons stalk the shallows here with improbable patience, and if you are lucky, you will spot a belted kingfisher darting low across the surface — a flash of electric blue that feels almost tropical against the Illinois sky.

What makes this spot especially appealing is how effortlessly it pairs with a longer Fox River Trail adventure. The trail connects Aurora’s historic downtown to the north and continues south toward Oswego, giving you anywhere from a short thirty-minute stroll to a full half-day excursion depending on your ambition. The riverfront here passes beneath old stone bridges, past restored prairie plantings, and alongside quiet neighborhood parks where locals picnic on weekend afternoons. It feels genuinely lived-in and loved, rather than curated for tourists.

Bring a proper pair of shoes and a water bottle, and consider timing your visit for the golden hour before sunset when the light catches the moving water in a way that is nearly impossible to photograph but absolutely impossible to forget. There is no admission fee, no reservations required, and no crowds fighting for space. It is simply Aurora at its most unguarded and beautiful — the river doing what it has always done, and a city wise enough to build a trail alongside it so the rest of us can watch.

The Bohn Street access point is easy to find off Illinois Route 25, with street parking available nearby. Whether you are visiting Aurora for the first time or you have lived here for years and somehow missed this stretch of riverfront, do yourself a favor and walk it soon. The Fox River has been rolling through this valley for thousands of years. It is in no particular hurry, and after an afternoon on this trail, neither will you be.
