Finn Murphy, a senior at Ames High in Iowa, has been playing soccer with a prosthetic leg since he was young. Born without a fibula, Finn had his right foot amputated at nine months old.
Overcoming Adversity
Despite the challenges he faces, Finn doesn’t feel any different from other players on the field. ‘When I’m playing, I forget it’s even there,’ Finn said, referring to his prosthetic leg. With the help of Shriner’s Children’s Twin Cities, a non-profit healthcare system, Finn has been able to receive the medical care he needs, including two surgeries and 15 prosthetics over his life.
Finn’s determination and perseverance have inspired those around him, including his mom, Kelly Murphy. ‘I don’t think he realizes how inspiring he is,’ she said. Finn’s message to others is clear: ‘Don’t let other people tell you what you can do. If you outwork people, it’s not going to be a setback at all.’
