Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam champion, returned to Wimbledon at the age of 44, playing her first singles match in nearly four years. Despite losing in three sets to 20-year-old Maya Joint of Australia, Williams expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to compete again.
Williams’ Comeback
Williams, who did not meet with media after the match, released a statement saying, “It was really great to be back at Wimbledon. I never expected to be here… The atmosphere was amazing. Walking out was amazing. I definitely relished it and missed it and enjoyed the moment more than anything.”
Williams showed she can still serve fast, with speeds over 120 mph, and dictate points with her heavy groundstrokes. However, movement was an issue for Williams, and Joint was able to handle Williams’ pace and win more of the big points.
Williams has 98 career victories and seven titles in singles on the grass courts of the All England Club. Her doubles match with older sister Venus is scheduled for later in the week.
