Iowa regulators are investigating Black Hills Energy after inspectors found more than 100 safety issues at the Spencer Unit during a June 2025 inspection.
The Iowa Utilities Commission identified the issues across 16 categories and officially opened its investigation in September, considering the possibility of issuing fines. Regulators expressed concern that the problems may not be isolated to the Spencer Unit and could be broader.
The commission clarified that none of the safety issues pose an immediate threat to the public.
In response to the investigation, Black Hills Energy said, “We are aware of the IUC’s order issued regarding Black Hills Energy and a compliance inquiry regarding pipeline safety. We will thoroughly review the Commission’s order and respond appropriately.”
