This is a weak year for NHL free agency, with some key players already finding new homes and signing new contracts. The free agent group doesn’t blow you away, but there are some major talent upgrades available for teams trying to make the next step.
Top 10 Players
Andersson, a 29-year-old defenseman, is a top-pairing player who helped propel the Golden Knights to the Stanley Cup. He is a do-everything defenseman who can play at home and be part of the offense, with 47 points in the 2025-26 season.
Carlson, a 36-year-old defenseman, is still playing elite hockey, registering 70 points in 71 games last year. He remains a top 10 defender in the NHL, but his camp is seeking a short-term deal in the $10M AAV range.
Mantha, a player who seems to flourish in a system that needs him, could be a great pickup for a team on the playoff bubble. He doesn’t have a bank-breaking sum in free agency due to his career inconsistency.
Trouba, a solid second-line defenseman, is a veteran presence on the line and can be a sneaky breakaway threat with his long passing ability.
Skinner, a low-level starter or premium backup, has value in a market with few talented goaltenders. Teams are still working out what happens with Sergei Bobrovsky and Connor Hellebuyck, which could impact Skinner’s market.
Ovechkin, a 40-year-old player, is deciding whether to retire, re-sign with the Capitals, or enter free agency. He is a defensive liability and not much of a passer, but could be enough for a terrible team to sell some tickets.
Bobrovsky, a goaltender who had a down season, finished with an .877 save percentage and allowing 3.07 goals per game. His agents are trying to sell him as a multi-year, $4.5M AAV talent, but he may be in decline.
Jenner, a player who is not amazing but has faceoff ability, could be a decent pickup for a team needing a third or fourth line guy.
Arvidsson, a player with a narrow skillset, is great at skating fast and putting shots on net. He could be a decent pickup if a team has a specific plan for him.
Marchment, a decent enough third-line player, could have some teams intrigued, but doesn’t bring a lot to the table.
