George Washington, the first president of the United States, is often remembered for his role in the country’s founding. However, there are many lesser-known facts about his life that showcase his diverse talents and interests.
Hidden Talents
One of Washington’s lesser-known talents was his ability to dance. According to Douglas Bradburn, president and CEO of George Washington’s Mount Vernon, Washington learned fencing and dancing from the same instructor, making him a skilled dancer for his time.
Washington was also a lover of the theater, attending plays whenever he could. He even had his soldiers perform a play called ‘Cato’ at Valley Forge to inspire them during the war.
In addition to his artistic pursuits, Washington was a skilled farmer and scientist. He used scientific methods to experiment with different types of plows, crop rotation, and soil boosters, making him one of the first scientific farmers in America.
After his term as president, Washington built a large whiskey distillery at Mount Vernon, which was later rebuilt and now offers tours and tastings.
