Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has mocked Russia’s military drive in eastern Ukraine, stating that the Kremlin has set and missed 15 deadlines to capture the region over the past four years.
Russia’s Military Efforts
Zelenskiy’s comments came in response to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s rejection of a Ukrainian proposal to scale down the fighting. Putin claimed that the proposal was an attempt to relieve pressure on Kyiv’s military.
Zelenskiy argued that Russia’s political leadership remains obsessed with capturing the Donbas region, which includes the Donetsk and Luhansk areas. He stated that if Russia does not end the war, it will have to postpone its deadline once again.
Russia has captured all of the Luhansk region and large chunks of the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions. However, Ukrainian officials say that Russia’s advance has slowed considerably as Ukraine steps up its campaign of medium and long-range drone strikes.
