The U.S. Census Bureau has released new estimates showing that the South is the only region in the country where the population of children has grown. This growth is part of a broader trend that saw the South experience increases in all age groups, with the exception of the 18 to 44 age range.
Regional Population Trends
The data, which covers demographics from 2020 to July 1, 2025, reveals that the South was the only region where the population of children under the age of 18 increased. Several counties in Texas, particularly those on the outskirts of Dallas and Houston, saw some of the largest increases in the population under 18.
In contrast, other parts of the country experienced declines in their child populations. The median age in the United States has continued to rise, with an estimated median age of 39.4 years old as of July 1, 2025, up from 39.2 the prior year.
