The Supreme Court has declined to hear an appeal from President Donald Trump over a $5 million verdict in a sexual abuse case. The decision means Trump will have to pay the amount to E. Jean Carroll, a magazine columnist who sued him for defamation and battery.
Background of the Case
Carroll sued Trump in 2019 for defamation and again in 2022 for defamation and battery after New York enacted a law allowing victims of sexual abuse to file civil claims for past incidents. The 2022 case went to trial first, and the jury awarded Carroll $5 million.
The 2019 case resulted in an $83 million judgment against Trump. Including interest, Trump owes Carroll over $100 million in total. Trump has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and claimed the judge made errors by allowing the jury to hear testimony from two women who alleged Trump sexually assaulted them years ago.
Trump also argued that the judge should not have let the jurors see the ‘Access Hollywood tape,’ which captured Trump making comments about groping and kissing women. The 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the jury’s $5 million verdict against Trump, ruling the trial judge did not make errors that would warrant a new trial.
