This Fourth of July holiday is expected to be the second-most expensive ever at the pump, with a record 72.2 million Americans traveling at least 50 miles from home during the nine-day period between June 27 and July 5.
Travel Plans Affected by Gas Prices
Many travelers are changing their plans to offset the higher cost of gas by choosing a destination closer to home or taking shorter trips. Some people are even choosing to stay home due to the high prices of everything, including food and hotel stays.
According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of gas is $3.86, down from its peak of around $4.50 in May. In the Raleigh area, the average price of regular unleaded gas is around $3.52 a gallon.
Travelers are adjusting their spending habits due to the higher prices. Maurice Gabriel, a traveler, said his family is cutting back on travel throughout the year and choosing to drive instead of fly because it’s still cheaper than flight costs.
