Central Florida has seen three reported alligator attacks in the last seven days. Experts are sharing tips on how to safely coexist with alligators and why these attacks could be increasing in frequency.
Recent Incidents
A woman was killed while swimming in the Little Big Econ River at Bar Street Trailhead in Geneva. A boy was attacked while fishing at Nelson’s Fish Camp in Marion County, and a snorkeler was bitten in Rainbow River.
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), it’s currently mating season for alligators, which means they are significantly more active. FWC offers tips on how to stay safe, including keeping a safe distance, never feeding alligators, and swimming only in designated areas during daylight hours.
People with concerns about an alligator can call FWC’s toll-free Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286). When someone calls the hotline, FWC dispatches a contracted nuisance alligator trapper to resolve the situation.
