Minneapolis played proud host to the Special Olympics USA Games this past week, with the event wrapping up over the weekend of June 27–28, 2026. Athletes from across the country gathered in the Twin Cities to compete, connect, and celebrate in one of the most uplifting sporting events the region has seen in years.
The Games brought together Special Olympics athletes representing states from coast to coast. Among the many highlights, a volleyball team from southeast Missouri earned a silver medal — a testament to the high level of competition and heart on display throughout the event.
Minneapolis served as the backdrop for days of athletic competition, community spirit, and inclusion, welcoming thousands of athletes, coaches, families, and volunteers. The Special Olympics USA Games are one of the largest national sporting events for athletes with intellectual disabilities, and this year’s edition in Minneapolis gave the city a chance to shine as a welcoming, energetic host community.
Whether cheering from the stands or volunteering on the floor, Twin Cities residents showed up in force to support the athletes and make the Games a memorable success for everyone involved.
