Oklahoma is set to implement over 100 new laws on July 1, including two major measures impacting education. Senate Bill 201 will increase the base pay for teachers across the state by $2,000, with the pay bump starting on July 1. This move aims to support educators and enhance the quality of education in Oklahoma.
Cell Phone Ban in Schools
House Bill 1276 will extend the bell-to-bell no-cellphone requirement for students. Under this law, students will be required to lock away their phones from the morning bell that starts classes until the last bell of the day. The phone ban has been on a trial run in districts across the state over the past year, and school leaders have reported positive results, including decreased discipline issues and improved student engagement.
According to Keith Sinor, Yukon Public Schools superintendent, the phone ban has been successful in reducing distractions and promoting a more focused learning environment. Sinor noted that while instant communication is a part of modern life, it’s essential for students to put away their phones during school hours to follow the law and engage in classroom activities.
The bell-to-bell no-cellphone law does allow students to use their phones in case of emergencies, ensuring that students can still access help when needed.
