WA Cares Launches Amid Concerns for Family Caregivers

As WA Cares prepares to launch, concerns have been raised about the lack of clear information for family caregivers. The program, which aims to provide long-term care benefits to eligible individuals, has been touted as a way to support family caregivers, but many are still unsure about how to access the benefits.

Program Details

According to the Department of Social and Health Services, 113 people have applied for the program, but only 44 have been deemed eligible. The application process has been moving faster than expected, with a median turnaround time of 8 days. However, many applicants have been denied due to not meeting the program’s contribution requirements.

Family caregivers have expressed frustration about the lack of clear guidance on how to become paid caregivers through the program. The program’s website does not clearly explain the requirements for family caregivers, and many are being funneled towards a union-linked employer, Consumer Direct Care Network Washington (CDWA). This has raised concerns about the potential for union membership or dues obligations, training requirements, and other costs that may be associated with becoming a paid caregiver.

Call for Clarity

Advocates are calling for clearer information and guidance for family caregivers, including details about the application process, eligibility requirements, and potential costs. The state should provide more transparency and clarity on these issues to ensure that family caregivers can make informed decisions about their loved ones’ care.
