State Rep. Stephanie Hilferty of New Orleans has won the Republican nomination for the District 1 Public Service Commission seat, earning 62% of the vote. Hilferty, who has established a voting record as a moderate in the Louisiana Legislature, will face Connie Norris, a consumer utility advocate from Slidell, and Chris Justin, an engineer from New Orleans, in the November general election.

Hilferty has pushed for reform within the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans, a state entity that has long struggled to provide reliable drinking water, drainage, and sewage service in the city. She will replace Eric Skrmetta, a Republican from Metairie who has reached his term limit.
In another race, Joseph Cao, a former congressman from Harvey, has won the Republican nomination for the District 1 seat on the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. Cao, who was appointed to the seat on an interim basis by Gov. Jeff Landry, will face Angela Hershey, a retired teacher from Madisonville, in the November general election.
