Tulane University is in the final stages to revitalize the historic Charity Hospital in New Orleans, which has been abandoned since Hurricane Katrina. The university has run out of space on its Uptown campus, prompting the need for expansion.
Redevelopment Plans
Two-thirds of the one-million-square-foot former hospital will be repurposed for the Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and the Tulane University Innovation Institute. Aspects of the Tulane School of Medicine will also be included, as well as state-of-the-art classrooms, community spaces, and labs for about 700 new researchers.
A private developer will convert the remaining square footage into apartments. The redevelopment is expected to bring approximately 2,500 new jobs to the area.
Tulane students shared their excitement about the redevelopment and its potential impact. Major construction is set to begin this fall, with completion expected by 2029.
