June’s full moon, known as the Strawberry Moon, will appear on the evening of Monday, June 29. This full moon is also a micro moon, meaning it will appear smaller in the sky since it is at its apogee, or furthest point from the Earth in its orbit.
Traditional Names for June’s Full Moon
The Strawberry Moon is one of several traditional names for June’s full moon, used by the Indigenous Sioux, Ojibwe, and Algonquin peoples of the Great Plains and the Great Lakes regions of the U.S. Other Native American names for the June full moon include Berries Ripen Moon and Moon of the Crane.
Outside of the Americas, the Celtic names for June’s full moon are the Mead Moon and the Horse Moon. The micro moon can appear about 7% smaller than the average full moon and up to 14% smaller than a super full moon.
