The United States is celebrating 250 years of nationhood, but the history of the land and its people stretches back much further. From colonial times to the pre-Columbian era, the country is home to numerous historic sites that predate its founding.

Ancient Earthen Mounds

In what is now Iowa, Native peoples constructed elaborate earthen mounds along the Mississippi River over 2,500 years ago. The Effigy Mounds are associated with about 20 Native American tribes and served ceremonial, spiritual, and burial functions.

In Ohio, the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park preserves dozens of large burial and ceremonial mounds. The mounds are scattered across five different sites and are executed with great precision, aligning with sun and moon cycles.

Historic Taverns and Landmarks

The White Horse Tavern in Newport, Rhode Island, is considered one of the nation’s oldest operating restaurants. The structure dates back to 1652, and the tavern has been a meeting place for the colonial assembly, city council, and criminal court.

The Colonial Inn in Concord, Massachusetts, played a role in the American Revolution and was a target of the British Army’s march from Boston. The inn is still standing today and offers a glimpse into the country’s rich history.
