The Tampa Museum of Art has launched a new exhibit, Mysteries of the Nile: Ancient Egypt, showcasing 117 objects from the Royal Ontario Museum and local private collections.
Ancient Egyptian Artifacts on Display
The exhibit, curated by Dr. Branko van Oppen, features a range of artifacts, including mummies, pieces of sarcophagi, and objects related to kings and queens. One of the highlights is a relief of the pharaoh Horemheb, the only one of its kind outside of Egypt.
Van Oppen is particularly enthusiastic about the exhibit’s artifacts from everyday Egyptian life, which provide insight into the Egyptians’ unwavering belief in an afterlife. According to van Oppen, the Egyptians envisioned the afterlife as a perfect version of life in Egypt, without illness, warfare, or shortages.
The Tampa Museum of Art is currently undergoing a comprehensive construction and endowment effort, which includes the addition of over 51,000 square feet of new space along the Tampa Riverwalk. The museum has received over $100 million in support for its capital campaign, including a $28 million lead gift from Tampa real estate developer Dick Corbett.
