A recent study published in The Washington Post found that the most prominent AI chatbots, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude, have a liberal bias. The study tested these AI tools with political questions and found that they often presented only left-leaning arguments.
Findings of the Study
According to the study, OpenAI’s ChatGPT presented left-leaning responses 80% of the time, while providing both sides of an argument only 17% of the time. DeepSeek, an AI company with affiliations with the Chinese Communist Party, presented liberal arguments 70% of the time. Gemini, on the other hand, laid out both sides of an argument 93% of the time, with only 7% of its responses being solely left-leaning.
The study also found that Grok, an AI chatbot featured on Elon Musk’s X, had a slight liberal bias, with 40% of its responses being left-leaning, 33% being right-leaning, and 27% being balanced.
Response from AI Companies
Representatives from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic responded to the study’s findings. An OpenAI spokesperson stated that ChatGPT was built to be objective by default and help people explore ideas from different perspectives. A Google spokesperson touted Gemini as being the most neutral, designed to provide balanced responses that don’t favor any political ideology.
