Stephen A. Smith, a sports commentator and host of the ‘Straight Shooter’ podcast, has criticized the multi-million-dollar net worths of former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. Smith argued that the leaders of the country should only prosper financially if Americans are also doing so.
Questioning the Source of Wealth
Smith expressed doubt about how Clinton obtained his multi-million-dollar net worth, given that he was a lawyer in Arkansas and grew up relatively poor. He also pointed to Obama’s similar high net worth, noting that his salary as President was not over $450,000. According to an investigation by Forbes, both Bill and Hillary Clinton have netted approximately $240 million since leaving office in 2021, with Bill Clinton responsible for the majority of the couple’s earnings through book authoring and paid speeches.
Smith stated that he does not mind if politicians are earning high profits if the American people are also doing well financially, but he does not believe that is currently the situation in the country. He emphasized that it is a capitalistic society, and if the American people are prospering, then politicians should also be able to prosper.
