Losing your iPhone can be stressful, especially if it’s stolen. Apple has updated its guidance to help you protect your device and personal information. The company advises putting your iPhone in ‘Lost Mode’ immediately after realizing it’s been stolen. This can be done by signing in to your Apple Account at iCloud.com/find or using the Find My app on another Apple device.
What to Do If Your iPhone Is Stolen
When you enable Lost Mode, you’ll be asked if you want to display a phone number and message on the lock screen. However, if your phone was stolen, Apple recommends skipping this step. A thief can use your phone number to scam you by pretending to be Apple Support or claiming your phone has been recovered.
It’s also essential to never remove the phone from ‘Find My.’ This feature prevents thieves from erasing and setting up the phone as their own. Without Activation Lock, a stolen iPhone becomes more valuable to thieves, as it can be resold as a working device.
Be cautious of fake ‘Apple’ messages, as they may be scams. Apple will never contact you to tell you your stolen iPhone has been found. If you can’t recover your phone, report the theft to your local police, contact your wireless carrier to suspend service, and remotely erase the phone.
