The City of Casper has secured a $15,000 flagship grant from AARP to stabilize an existing interior walking trail at Morad Park. The goal is to steer pets and owners away from the river, which borders the natural area. Last year, two dogs died after becoming trapped in the North Platte River ice.
Project Details
The project will fortify a 1,200-foot path with road base through the center of the park. Trail counters showed that community members accessed the off-leash facility more than 136,000 times last year. Volunteers with Theo’s Legacy – Friends of Morad Park proposed the changes to keep dogs safe during the cold weather months.
“We are hoping to see more users using the path further from the river during the winter months when it is more susceptible for dogs to go running into the river when they shouldn’t be,” said JJ Dockendorf, parks department administrative specialist.
AARP Community Challenge Initiative
The local grant is part of $66,000 awarded to seven nonprofits and communities across Wyoming through AARP’s Community Challenge initiative. Over the past 10 years, the organization has awarded 30 grants totaling more than $300,000 to Wyoming projects.
