The latest DC release, Supergirl, has its moments, but struggles to match the punk-rock energy of its lead character, played by Milly Alcock. Alcock’s performance is a welcome, jagged riff on more traditional superheroes, and she is terrific in the role.
The Story
Supergirl resides almost entirely in space, touching down only momentarily on Earth. The movie’s consistently creative production design, clever needle drops, and underdog story arc make it a fun, if imperfect, film. The story follows Kara, a young woman with superpowers, as she navigates the galaxy and gets caught up in a battle against space pirates.
While the movie has its moments, it is ultimately let down by a lackluster supporting cast and story. The film’s attempt to match Kara’s punk-rock energy with an equally spirited supporting cast and story falls short.
