President Donald Trump clashed with Senate Republicans on Wednesday over a war powers resolution, berating them in a closed-door meeting for their opposition to his actions in Iran. The meeting came after a similar resolution passed the Senate on Tuesday, with four Republicans voting with Democrats.
War Powers Resolution Rejected
Later on Wednesday, Senate Republicans rejected a separate but nearly identical war powers resolution, with Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy, one of the Republicans who had voted with Democrats on Tuesday, switching his vote after receiving a personal briefing from Vice President JD Vance and envoy Steve Witkoff. The measure failed 47-50-1, with Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul voting present to give the President more space to negotiate a lasting peace.
Trump had called the Republicans who voted against his war ‘losers’ and had called Cassidy a ‘lunatic’ after their tense exchange. However, after the vote, Trump thanked Senate Majority Leader John Thune and noted that Cassidy and Paul had switched their votes, saying ‘This vote puts Iran on notice!’
Trump’s Reversal on Housing Bill
The clash between Trump and Senate Republicans came as the President reversed himself on a bipartisan housing bill, saying he would not sign it until the Senate passes his proof-of-citizenship voting bill. The move was seen as a sign of Trump’s increasing frustration with Senate Republicans, who have been at odds with him over various issues, including the war in Iran and his endorsement of primary challengers to incumbent GOP senators.
